ABOUT ME
I'm John Downing, a solo acoustic guitarist based in Raleigh-Durham. I've been doing this professionally for almost twenty years — country clubs, corporate retreats, private parties, and everything in between.
I READ THE ROOM BEFORE I DECIDE WHAT TO PLAY.
...and that starts weeks ahead of time. A member appreciation dinner, a corporate closing reception, a cocktail hour before a general session — these all call for something different, and I ask the right questions up front to figure out which one I'm walking into: who's attending, what the event actually is, what the client's hoping the evening feels like. From there I can run pure instrumental background through dinner, or build toward a full sing-along set once the room's ready for it. Both are in the toolkit; the read of the room decides which one you get.
I WORK BOTH CHANNELS
Some of my bookings come direct from clubs and planners, others come through agencies like East Coast Entertainment. Either way, I know how the process works on your end — timelines, riders, day-of logistics, getting the details locked before load-in — so I'm not a wildcard you have to manage, I'm a vendor you can hand off and stop thinking about.
RELIABILITY IS THE ACTUAL PRODUCT
I'm in the service industry and I know it. I arrive early, not just on time — usually a two-hour buffer before I ever play a note, so setup, sound check, and any last-minute changes happen with zero stress on your timeline. I show up dressed for the room, not just for the gig. And once something's on my calendar, it's locked.
I've played Pinehurst, Bald Head Island Club, and Country Club of the Carolinas, among many others, and I'm a regular partner with East Coast Entertainment on corporate and private club work across the state.
If you're a planner, a DMC, or a club coordinating your next event — member function, corporate retreat, holiday party, whatever it is — I'd love to talk through what you're planning and whether I'm the right fit.
